Britain says it is watching the Falkland Islands situation "closely" after Argentina's warning that it will take "adequate measures" to stop oil exploration off the south Atlantic archipelago.

But junior foreign minister Chris Bryant stressed London's desire to avoid an escalation in tension over the Falklands, the object of a brief but bloody war between the two countries in 1982.
